Thursday 28th June 2012 – travel and walk **** mixed with sunny periods

We set out for our trip to Wales at around 11 a.m... Drove down to Datchet near Windsor to stop for lunch on the river Thames near Windsor. We sat on a bench and had our rolls watching the ducks, swans, geese (including Egyptian ones) and red kites flying overhead :) We saw 6 red kites in total today – they certainly love the motor ways! The roads were not as bad as last time we were on them but they are still far too busy :( We drove round Windsor and got really close to the castle which is really a stunning building. The flag was flying so her Maj must have been resident but we knew she was in London at the do for the bomber command memorial because we saw a Lancaster bomber and some jets fly over for the fly past. There was also a constant stream of Planes going into Heathrow. Left there and drove on to see Rob. Stopped at Newlands Corner which has a stunning view over the downs and had a walk there. Also stopped at Silent Pool which is a natural spring and has two lakes with very clear water. There was also a vineyard alongside. On to Sayers Croft where we camped in the car park again :) Rob came over and we went back to his place and had a chat with him and Hannah before going for a lovely walk in the woods. We took them for a Pizza Express meal with our Tesco points – used £70 worth and gave them the £10 left over. They paid for the drinks. Mag had to go back to the van because she was wearing her new shades and got into the restaurant and of course her ordinary glasses were back in the van! We had a good chat ,it was great. Rob has had so,oooo much good news – he has been chosen to stay on for an extra month on more pay (and staying in a caravan!) to run the Duke of Edinburgh activities. He has been doing everything to do with that because Anne (his supervisor) has been off sick. Hannah’s boss is very very keen for him to join the Swannage set up and for both of them to go there in February after their travels :) Then he has also had an e-mail from Jo saying that he has passed his Masters :) That is a huge weight off his shoulders to think that is finally done. He just has a few corrections to do and that’s it. He doesn’t want to go to the graduation though. We drove back and had more chat in the van because we won’t see them tomorrow. Rob is going to help his friend Tom with bush crafts at a school in Southampton (for £100!) and is leaving at 5 in the morning and we don’t want to disturb Hannah on her day off! They pointed out some of the places they went in Wales and they really do seem to be very happy together.

Friday 29th June 2012 – travel and walk *** mixed

We left Sayers after a chat with David the boss who leant us his old ordnance survey map of Snowdonia :) He and his family were taking their caravan and canoes to West Mersea – how weird that we are down here and they are going back our way! We drove to Odiham RAF base and parked near the Chinook helicopter as instructed and met Jon and picked up the sail I had bought the sail off e-bay. That was over very quickly then drove on – we had to ignore the sat nav because the M3 had been closed off for some reason so we drove up to Reading and got on the M4 and drove all the way to Mumbles near Swansea on that. We had lunch at one of the service stations and Mag drove from there. It was an easy trip but tiring as travelling always is! We went across the Severn Bridge and it cost £6 which was a relief because we thought it was going to be £12 which it is for a van!!! We parked for an hour (£1) at Bracelet bay and had a cuppa and walked along the prom and cliffs there. We drove back to Mumbles because we knew Mag and David were at an event here this weekend and saw them parked in a sea front car park near the sailing club. They said we could park with them and probably not pay the £5 a night fee. Had a cuppa with Mag and David. We then read for a bit and had filled pasta and cheese for tea. Went for a walk along the prom towards Swansea after and through some woodland to the castle then back towards the lighthouse for a bit. The weather has been really heavily overcast and even a bit drizzly today. It is also swinging between being muggy and chilly. Not at all summery considering it is July on Sunday!!! Rob texted to say he had a great day doing the bush crafts and it was the easiest £100 he had ever earnt:) The guy was even buying them a curry :)
